Sauron (Quenya; [ˈsaʊron] or [ˈθaʊron]), the eponymous Lord of the Rings, was the greatest fallen Maia, a former renowned disciple of Aulë, the chief agent of the first Dark Lord Morgoth in the Elder Days (First Age), the second Dark Lord, the maker of the One Ring, and self-proclaimed ruler of the Middle-earth in the Second Age and near the end of the Third Age. In the Days before days, Sauron was corrupted by Melkor (later named Morgoth) to betray the Valar and serve him. He served as Morgoth's chief lieutenant throughout the First Age.
